Sixth source for the research paper

(Second Scholarly blog post)

Sixth source I used for my research paper is "Seoul Searching: Culture and identity in contemporary korean cinema". This source is mainly giving informations about contemporary korean cinema. I mainly focused on the melodrama section of the book and took a close look at the movies that the book was emphasizing on. This book has many contents that focuses on pre-twenty first century korean melodramas, but I focused on the twenty first century melodrama and the shift that was made from the previous melodramas. This source was useful because it gave ideas about korean cinemas especial on melodramas focusing on contemporary films. It was hard to find a source that would efficiently help my paper and my argument, but this book, by giving details on contemporary melodramas, helped me shape and support my argument. This would fit great with my other sources because this source would support other sources by providing vast informations about korean melodramas. I have learned a lot from this source about korean melodrama's characteristics though it does not specifically mentions Lee Byung hun. I will work this source into my research paper by showing specific characteristics of korean melodramatic films and how those films led to those characteristics that were mentioned in this source. This source is reliable and not biased because it used and provided many out side sources to support its arguments and informations. Also I picked out informations about 21 century works with specific details that proves the argument. I got a gist of specific characteristic of contemporary korean melodrama.

Fifth Source for the Research paper

(previous ones were not scholarly so I will do 2 more including this for kind of a make up blog post)

Fifth source I used for my research paper is called "Everything you need to know about Lee Byung Hun". This book is basically a summery of all the filmography that Lee Byung Hun played in. It has all the lists of dramas, movies and even CF that he took part in. Though it does not have thorough explanation of each specific films, it does give some basic informations about films. This source is extremely useful because it gives overall pictures of which works he participated in and it really help me access the changes of his role in movies as time goes by. It also works well with my other sources because other sources either talks specifically about certain topic but this source gives overall picture of where I should look at and makes it easier for me to fit other sources into right places. This information is hundred percent reliable because this is solely based on facts. This source was an extremely useful source to me because I really needed kind of a map to guided which film goes where and this book guided me so that I won't mix up when the sources such as movies or other scholarly sources come into place. This source has strengthened my argument by providing an exact time line of movies and films. I used this source to organize my paper so that everything would be clear as in time wise. This source did not change the way I think about the topic. It just strengthened my original argument.

Fourth Source for the research paper

My fourth blog post is the film called "Masquerade" which features Lee Byung Hun as a main character. In this film, Lee Byung Hun is a disguised king who is a replacement of the real king for just a short period of time. However, as he spent more time as a king, he became more of a king and people who were suppose to follow the real king started to follow this puppet king. Followers knew that even though he was from the lower caste, he has what it takes to be a king. For half a month he was in palace, he had a great impact on the society and caused real king towards the right path using his leaderships for 15 days. Also, he met a women in palace which I will more specifically talk about in the thesis paper, and that caused him to act more boldly. This source is reliable because it is one of the main melodramatic film that Lee Byung Hun played in. This source, along with other films, is an example of Lee Byung Hun's melodramatic filmography. This source strongly supports my argument by showing specific examples of melodramatic role that Lee Byung Hun plays in. This source fits extremely well with my thesis paper because this film's melodramatic system goes similarly along with the melodramatic systems in other films that Lee Byung Hun plays in. Because his films have similar source of melodrama in it, it really helps my argument for my thesis paper. This films would also lead me into other films that he have played in.

Third source for the research paper

For the third source I chose "The Lee Byung Hun Hand Book: Everything you need to know about Lee Byung Hun". This scholarly source has the details I need on Leegbyung hun from all the films and TV Series. It lists all the films he was in and which role he played and how his role contributed to the plot. It also gives basic plots to those movies he was in so I can brush up my memory when trying to incorporate those films into the essay. This source is extremely useful because I am going to focus on his life as well as his works and this source provides us with broad range of his filmography as well as basic informations about his personal life. Though the information about his personal life indicated in this book is relatively short and simple, it gave me an idea on where to start focus on his personal life. Also, this source is really going to help me because it has films by Lee from 1995 up to 2015 which covers all of his works. This source has definitely shaped and strengthened my argument by providing me with informations that I lacked just by watching his films and giving me a better interpretations on the film. Though I had to pay 10 dollars to access this book, this was one of the few scholarly sources I could find that really focuses on the life of the Lee Byung hun as a movie star.

Second Source for the research paper

Second source I would be using is a movie by Kim Jee Won Called "A Bitter Sweet life". So now I have definitely decided that I would only focus on Kim Jee Won instead of also looking at Bong Jun Ho's film. Though I think they works are somewhat similar and successfully show korean style of melodramas, focusing only on Kim Jee Won's films would give more specific descriptions about korean melodramas. So for the second source I choose "A Bitter Sweet Life" which is one of his most well-known work. Though this films mainly consists of violent materials, the story line revolves around the basic melodramatic love line. Combination of violence and love story comes into place many times within Kim Jee Won's film. This source is useful because this film is one of Kim Jee Won's finest and most well known piece. This film brought his name up to the surface of film industry in korea. By citing this film, it helps me to give better examples of the characteristics of korean melodramas. These films are fundamental parts of my argument. This film, with other films by Kim, really shows his style of representing korean melodrama into the film.

First source for the research paper

The topic I choose to discuss is different characteristics and features of melodramas in Korea. Also I am going to specify one or two directors and mainly talk about their works. First source I am going to use is a movie called "I saw the devil" by Kim Jee Woon. This movie is really interesting because it contains many different features including those of melodrama. To briefly summarize this film, "I saw the devil" is about a husband chasing after a murderer who killed his wife. However, the interesting thing about this movie is that this husband is more of a psychopath that the murderer so the husband intentionally let the murderer escape just so he could recapture him and make him suffer again. However, the murderer eventually finds rest of this husband's family and does not go through as the husband planned. This source is useful because I am going to compare this film with some other films of the same director. I am also look for some melodramatic features of his films so evaluating "I saw the devil" is definitely an important process. This source is reliable because this film is one of the best representation of his works and I guess this is an subjective source because it is a work of art. This source will definitely fit well into my thesis paper because it would reflect the director really well and really show his style of presenting his thoughts into a film.

Possible Topics for Research Paper

My first option for my write up could be about melodramas and its style in Korea. Because Korean people love watching dramas, there are many different kinds of melodramas in Korea. I could write on different styles of melodramas in different countries focusing mainly on Korea. Growing up, I was not a big fan of melodrama because I was more of a action and robot kind of kid but since Korea was really big into melodramas, I was exposed to a lot of dramas and love stories nonetheless. From the experiences of my own, I could categorize different types of melodramas in Korea, and compare and contrast them with those of other countries such as ones from UK that we looked at. Also melodrama in Korea has changed significantly from time to time, so I could also divide melodramas by time frame and compare melodramas from different time span. A lot of the Korean dramas or songs and pretty much everything else centers around the theme of love. Almost every single Korean Dramas have melodramatic elements added to them. It is going to be easy to find many different examples of melodramas from Korean shows. Also I believe Korean melodramas are slightly different from American melodramas because they are extremely cheesy and focuses almost too much on romance. Also some of the twists and turns with in the characters of melodramas are absurd and so unrealistic. There should be a lot to say about Korean melodramas.
